Our mission
Coaching that reacts to your data
Training, nutrition, health and upkeep in one system: four modules that read each other, adjusting automatically and transparently, on your terms.
Rules you can read
Your progression, your macros, your phase changes are all worked out by rules you can read, not a chatbot guessing. The same training gives the same plan, every time, and every change comes with its reason.
Reactive, not static
The weight on the bar moves off the sets you logged, and your calories move off your rolling weigh-in trend, instead of a program you set once and forget.
Configurable, not opinionated
Progression methods, macro splits, deloads, carb cycling, refeeds are all configurable per person or per coach. The app is the tool, not the authority.
Where it came from
MuscleBuddy started as one person's spreadsheets. Garrett was training seriously as an aspiring bodybuilder while managing health complications, mental health, and autoimmune conditions, and no product would hold both halves at once. A lifting app, a food app, a notes file, and a spreadsheet, none of which knew the others existed.
That is why the health module exists at all, and it is the answer to why a lifting app would care about your labs. The tooling got built so that anyone in the same position gets it instead of having to assemble it themselves.
Why we built it
Most fitness apps hand you a static template and leave the hard part, reading your progress and changing the plan, entirely to you. Coaches do that work well, but a good one is expensive and can't watch every set and every weigh-in.
MuscleBuddy closes that gap. It reads the data you already logged and adjusts the plan the way a competent coach would: adding weight when you clear your targets, nudging calories off a rolling weigh-in trend, backing off a lift that has stopped moving. Every adjustment comes with a plain-language reason, so you're never handed a change you can't understand.
Four modules, one system
Training generates a program around your goal, experience and equipment, then moves the load when your logged sets earn it. Nutrition moves your calorie and macro targets off your rolling weigh-in trend. Health tracks bloodwork, vitals, recovery from real HRV and resting heart rate, supplements and hormones. Upkeep holds the maintenance cadences that run on clocks longer than a day: medications, appointments, fasting windows, conditions, skin routine.
The claim is the integration, not any one module. Any competitor can add a food log. What is hard to copy is one product where the weigh-in trend that moved your calories is the same data the training engine reads, and where a rough recovery week shows up in all four places at once.
Who it is for
People training seriously who also have real health to manage. That is one audience, not two. The lifter with autoimmune flares, or medication that moves their weight, or a mental-health week that costs them three sessions, is the person this was built for.
The range inside that audience is wide and both ends matter. Comprehensive enough for a competitive bodybuilder in prep who needs periodization, refeeds and their own bloodwork. Approachable enough for someone six weeks in who just wants to know what to do on Monday. Advanced tools reveal themselves as you engage more deeply or as a coach unlocks them.
Coaches get first-class tools too. A coach configures methodology per client, overrides any AI suggestion, and builds reusable program templates. The engine assists a coach; it never overrides their judgment.
How the coaching works
The numbers are worked out by rules, on purpose. Progression (double progression, linear, RPE, percentage, wave), macro adjustments, deload timing, and phase planning all follow rules we can show you and test, not model output you have to second-guess.
AI has a narrower job here: it talks with you, reads your check-ins, and explains compound interactions in plain language. It explains and converses; it does not compute your program. That split is what lets you check the work behind every number you train and eat by.
Grounded in the evidence
Where the science is clear, MuscleBuddy's defaults reflect it. Where it is genuinely debated (carb cycling, refeeds, reverse dieting, specific macro ratios) the app presents the options without picking a winner and lets you or your coach decide. Our written guides are checked against the primary literature, and compound entries carry citations to their sources so you can read further.
MuscleBuddy is a training, nutrition, health and upkeep tool, not a medical provider. It does not diagnose, treat, or prescribe. The health and upkeep modules describe what you logged and flag values against reference ranges for your awareness: discuss anything flagged with a qualified clinician.
Who is behind it
MuscleBuddy is built and maintained by a small, independent team pairing software engineering with strength-training and nutrition practice. Editorial content is published under The MuscleBuddy Team, whose coaching and sports-science background informs every guide, and reviewed against the research rather than opinion.
We are reachable and accountable: questions, corrections, and data-attribution issues go to garrett@garrettmakesit.com, and we fix what we get wrong.
Frequently asked
- Is MuscleBuddy an AI coach?
Partly. The calculations that matter (progression, macro adjustments, deloads, phase planning) follow rules, not AI. The AI handles coaching chat, check-in analysis, and compound explanations. The numbers you train and eat by come from tested logic, and you can check its work.
- What are the four modules?
Training, Nutrition, Health and Upkeep. Training programs and progresses your lifts, Nutrition moves your macro targets off your weigh-in trend, Health covers recovery, bloodwork, vitals and supplements, and Upkeep holds medications, appointments, fasting windows and the other cadences longer than a day. Each one reads the others.
- Do I need a coach to use it?
No. MuscleBuddy works as a self-guided coach out of the box. If you do work with a coach, they can manage your programming and nutrition inside the same app, overriding any suggestion and setting their own methodology.
- Does MuscleBuddy give medical advice?
No. It is a training, nutrition, health and upkeep tool, not a medical provider. It does not diagnose, treat, or prescribe. Health features flag readings against reference ranges for your awareness only: discuss anything flagged with a qualified clinician.
- Is it free?
There is a free tier covering workout logging and auto-progression, nutrition tracking and macros, the health hub, check-ins and basic stack, medication and appointment tracking and ranks, leaderboards, challenges and the social feed. Pro ($9.99/mo) adds AI coaching chat, periodization and contest prep, meal planning and the advanced diet phases and advanced bloodwork and the compound checker. See the pricing page for the current breakdown.
